Relevance of Free Will

Just like a picture is equal to a thousand words, knowledge and remembrance of a positive word or a term is equal to the mighty strength to break free from the chain of bondage, and the impulses that follow. The term Free Will is just that.

Knowledge of the term Free Will and operating from it can lift oneself and can help one see a situation from a perspective of a witness. What can then follow is a response and not a reaction. ‘Respond, do not react’ are the golden words of the wise. Remembrance of the term Free Will is a gateway to that zone of mental awareness to be in a state of response and not reaction, or gaining that ‘freedom from reaction’. Essentially, it is the ability to choose to lift oneself by oneself, which develops the power and urge within to not get carried away by the situation outside, but be in connection with the peace within.

At a deeper level, it is functioning from a state of no expectations, with also no compulsion to respond, but one responds to only because one desires to. This is in fact the highest human state of both desire and response, where there is complete ‘freedom in action’. Free Will is a faculty that Human Beings are gifted with, unlike other living beings, which is why Human Beings can either evolve or devolve. Therefore, to know of this faculty within us is critical to override the defeatist belief that ‘destiny alone controls the outcome’. Instead, it enables to look at destiny in the eye and not be succumbed by it.
